Timber on the Manning

Edition 1. Research by Joan Gibson 1986
Edition 2. Revised by Margaret Clark 2026
The Manning Valley is approximately 9,000 square kilometres. The types of trees logged and the manner in which this was done were similar throughout the region. Basically, this is a look at some of the history of the timber industry in the area downstream from Gloucester to the mouth of the Manning River, as well as the area from Wingham to the Bulga and Comboyne Plateaux.

Boomer – A Decade on the Manning

by Robert Milliken

Travel with Robert, no seat belts, as he drives you into an utterly different Australia and brings alive the epic of the Milliken and Cross families. Join the ancestors arriving in Australia from Ireland and England as they settle, pioneer, and prosper in mid northern NSW, people of their times, certain of their ambition, qualm-free of their impact. The focus sharpens at the start of Robert’s childhood when as he says, the tail end of the settler mentality met the start of post – World War Two Australia.

Wingham Municipal Council’s Housing Scheme 1954 – 1980

by Bill Beach

Home ownership occupies a special place in the Australian psyche providing a strong sense of emotional security and safety. For 26 years Wingham Municipal Council conducted a remarkably successful housing finance scheme that assisted almost 400 local families to own their own home. There is little doubt that the housing scheme differentiated Wingham from many other country towns and is something of which the town can be proud.
