Opening of the New Cedar Party Creek Bridge
On Monday, 8th December 2025, Wingham celebrated the official opening of the new Cedar Party Creek Bridge. Janine Roberts gave a speech at the opening ceremony, outlining the history of the bridge.
For 156 years, a bridge has spanned Cedar Party Creek, linking our communities and carrying countless stories.
Castor – the Black from Madagascar        
Castor (a slave in Mauritius) came to the colonies as a convict and died in the Manning District in 1856. How did he get here?
Captain Jean Benaud – Master Mariner
French born, Jean Benaud was the captain of a number of ships plying the east coast run, including the Manning River.
Carlo Maddalena – From Switzerland
Carlo Maddalena was born in a little village called Gordevio, in the district of Vallemagia, Switzerland. He died in the Manning Valley in 1878.
Carl Andersson Karp – known as Charles Anderson             
Carl Andersson Karp (or Charles Anderson as he was known in Australia) was born in the village of Karpero, near Vasa in western Finland.

Focussing on the Lebanese families who made their homes in the Manning Valley and left their mark in the retail industry.
Chinese in the Manning Valley        
Ben Lee ( from China) established his market garden between the railway line and Cedar Party Creek Bridge, at the entrance to Wingham.
